The promotion of CSR from a healthcare providers association: the improvement of governance as an element of quality in management. Some demonstrative experiences

Learning objectives

  1. In the very makings and raison d’être of La Unió, as an association of healthcare providers, with the capacity to influence and support the development of the public health system in our country, is the promotion and support of a wide range of policies aimed at reinforcing the social responsibility of our members.
  2. La Unió is a driving force of social responsibility towards the society we serve, from offering methodological support and promotion, to putting a spotlight on those initiatives, acknowledging them, and providing tools to facilitate them.
  3. Third, sharing practical experience and the methodology employed to evaluate and promote, in an ordered, systematic way, the development of CSR policies of La Unió itself, and our members, by means of demonstration projects.

Summary of the session
CSR or better called social responsibility, aims to achieve a positive impact on society as a whole while maximizing the creation of shared value for healthcare providers, its employees, shareholders and stakeholders and, at last, to the healthcare system. Not so long ago, the European Commission defined CSR as “the responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society”, a succinct and distinct summation for sure. Successful CSR initiatives take organizations beyond compliance with legislation and leads them to honor ethical values and respect people, communities and the natural environment. CSR is sustainable – involving activities that your organization can maintain without adversely affecting your business goals.
For that, CSR is a method of running organizations, including healthcare service providers, which focuses on managing the impact of their activity on the community, users and their families, the workers and society in general, with the purpose of increasing the organization’s added value. CSR is a cross-cutting, overarching notion, affecting core managerial concepts. It must not only influence specific projects, but shape the very essence of the organization. CSR policies require the long-term commitment of the senior leadership. From La Unió, we have focused on our commitment with CSR in three main areas: the workers’ involvement, establishing a code of ethics, and transparency. It’s a dual-sided commitment: we aim to promote CSR in La Unió itself, and we cooperate with our members to develop the tools to consolidate their own commitment with CSR, based on the same ethical principles.
With this aim, we have elaborated a methodology to assess the progress of our members CSR policies, and assist them in the process of implementing the necessary initiatives and deploying the policies aimed to achieve their CSR goals.
These are the two aspects of managing CSR from La Unió: La Unió’s own CSR as a healthcare providers association, and its promotion and deployment among our members. From La Unió, we only understand a CSR that is inseparably linked with its promotion among our members, to achieve a social commitment that should be embraced by all the health care providers in our country.

Presentation: Fundacio Integralia Vallés a strategic business in a border social responsibility initiative
Objectives: The goal of the Fundació Integralia Vallès is to promote the integration of people who are unemployed or at risk ox exclusion. The high unemployment rate among disabled people results in exclusive dependence, low self-esteem frustration.
The social objective is to integrate people with disabilities who have difficulties in joining the workforce. The Center has envisaged this to be achieved through training and work experience in an environment that enables their professional development.

Presentation: Healthcare team’s autonomy: Social management as integrative factor
Objectives: To increase the commitment of our medical professionals in this model and in daily management of clinical resources, we created the Medical Clinical Management Teams (Equips de Gestió Assistencial Mèdics EGAM). EGAM’s aim is to promote team’s autonomy and flatten our organization by giving to medical services skills to plan and accomplish their activities. Competency assessment analysis was applied to follow evolution of healthcare workers (HCW). From 2016, emotional intelligence analysis was added to competency assessment.
