Learning objectives

  • Obtain perspectives on why increasing the professionalization of healthcare management is important to the delivery of safe and efficient healthcare.
  • Understand the research opportunities aligned with healthcare management professionalization.
  • Understand how the web based competency platform, Leadership Competencies for Healthcare Services Managers was developed.
  • Present a case for using the web based competency platform to grow in one’s own professional development and advancement at the organization and government levels.
  • Obtain perspective and opportunities to participate with the HM-SIG’s global initiatives and planned outcomes

 
Summary of the session
The IHF Healthcare Management Special Interest Group (HM-SIG) was established to progress global recognition of the healthcare management profession. Commencing with the development of the Leadership Competencies for Healthcare Services Managers Directory, the HM SIG is progressing international initiatives to:

  • Promote formal recognition of healthcare management as a profession;
  • Develop programs to support emerging healthcare management associations;
  • Provide a network of healthcare executive and management associations committed to achieving better health outcomes; and
  • Support the adoption of the Global Healthcare Competency Directory as a global framework.

 
The session will provide an overview of the progress by the HM-SIG and an outline of the planned initiatives and outcomes for the next three years. The session will include presentations on the :

  • Overview of the Healthcare Management SIG progress to date.
  • Research agenda aligned with health management professionalization.
  • Use of the Web based competency-platform for personal development and advancement at organisation and government levels.
  • Development and support opportunities for professional health management associations.
  • Healthcare Management SIG initiatives and work plan outline 2017-2020
