The Application of Innovative Technology in the Healthcare Industry

Category: Technology and changes in healthcare organizations

Learning objectives

  • Through the integration of all intelligent-devices systems, the hospital can reroute tasks intelligently to reduce manpower and the possibility of unexpected errors, and also shorten patient’s waiting time. This also makes the hospital’s operation management become more efficient.
  • In light of the ever-growing healthcare market and global demand in long-term care, the development of personalized assistant robots has seen a soaring rise; whether designed for cleaning service, personal companionship, entertainment, education, care assistance, or professional medical applications, robots are now entering the market via many forms and presentations.
  • In traditional design, the space in hospital will be built first then users have to compromise or adjust their daily work scenarios and service patterns to fit the space. This research is aimed to establish a new model that would take in both medical professionals and patients’ requirements from predesign phase in order to create a patient-centered, staff-oriented and technology-advanced medical environment then further drive the brand-new medical culture transformation.

Summary of the session
With the advance of science and technology, there were a new wave of technological innovation in the Healthcare industry. A majority of this wave is attributed to the growing adoption of various healthcare IT solutions by healthcare providers in order to meet the heightened regulatory requirements for patient care and safety, increasing need to curtail the soaring healthcare costs, and growing need to improve the quality of healthcare while maintaining the operational efficiency of healthcare organizations.

To provide the most advanced and comprehensive healthcare, Yuanlin Christian Hospital (YCH) developed the first intelligent hospital recently in Asia to comply with patients’ demands and the environment rapidly changing. YCH integrated the latest information and communication technologies with HIS to provide comprehensive medical services and improve outpatient efficiency. Deploying various digital signage systems not only makes the hospital’s operation management become more efficient and enhance medical quality, but also reduce possibilities of unexpected manual error and manpower.

Recently, the applicability of care assistant robots has enhanced significantly through smart integration with modern innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, and big data science, thus shows promise in fostering broader and more dynamic modes of service. Show Chwan Health Care System and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. had shared a long collaboration in the development of “Zenbo”, a medical assistant robot that has entered service in selected medical facilities, pediatric outpatient clinics, and front desk areas. Zenbo is also looking forward to be deployed in day /senior care centers, with high expectations of further promoting the quality of care. This unique mode of service, in parallel with various wearable monitoring devices and long-distance caregiving technologies, can better ensure patient safety through real-time monitoring of patient condition, data auto-interpretation, and personalized care service, all of which are empowered by big data analytics and an intelligent care engine developed by the joint efforts of Taiwan and Japan.

Hospital of Tomorrow, that is to fuse Service and Management concepts into design principles then combined with evidence-based Research and emerging Technology to build a user-centered Architecture and healing healthcare environment- has been developed and successfully applied to both brand-new and renovation hospital design projects.
