This session explores initiatives to adapt and reshape hospital leadership practices for operational excellence. Dr Siddiq Anwar

Consultant Nephrologist, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC); Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Khalifa University, UAE

Dr Anwar is keen on using data-driven decision-making in healthcare and process optimization to improve overall healthcare outcomes. He spearheaded the digitalization of the End Stage Renal Disease program in SEHA and the digitalization of the Complete Acute Kidney Injury Management pipeline at SSMC and helped set up the Paired Kidney Exchange program in UAE. This work has been awarded by HIMSS, the Arab Hospitals Federation, and the Patient Safety Conference. He also was awarded the best nephrologist in the UAE by Health Magazine in 2023.

He is collaborating with colleagues from Khalifa University and Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence to develop an AI Platform, “RenAIssance” to help improve Acute Kidney Injury outcomes. Their team won the grand prize in a hackathon organized by Ericsson & UAE Ministry of Economy and their team was a semifinalist in the 3C-AI4H Bowl-Institute for Augmented Intelligence in Medicine (I.AIM), at Northwestern University, USA. In addition, he has received a research grant from the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi.

He has strong experience and expertise in state-of-the-art patient care and research. He can develop strategies and build programs from scratch, enhance established programs, and establish new opportunities. He is leading many innovations in medical informatics to promote data-driven decision-making in medicine. He has experience in engaging the community, competing centers, and supporting organizations. He is supporting capacity-building initiatives across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa to create a workforce to develop sustainable healthcare systems.

Dr Amir ElTelwany

Executive Director and CEO,

Dr Amir ElTelwany is the pioneering Chief Executive Director (CEO) of the Egypt Healthcare Authority (EHA), blazing a trail as the first individual to hold this esteemed position since its inception in 2019. With an illustrious career path, Dr ElTelwany previously served as the Deputy Director of the Universal Health Insurance Project and distinguished himself as the Project Manager of the Japanese-Egyptian Quality Improvement Project within Egyptian hospitals. His leadership journey encompasses vital roles within Ministry of Health hospitals, where he showcased exemplary vision and unwavering dedication.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to public service, Dr ElTelwany was bestowed with the prestigious Egypt Award for Government Excellence in its third edition in 2022 – earning accolades as the “Best Sector Head” among recipients of individual excellence awards. His academic endeavors underscore a commitment to excellence: holding a Master’s Degree in Clinical Operations from Harvard University, augmented by the Egyptian Fellowship in Health Facilities Management. Additionally, he possesses a Master’s Degree in Diagnostic Radiology and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Interventional Diagnostic Radiology.

Under Dr ElTelwany’s visionary stewardship, the EHA has experienced unprecedented progress across all facets of the healthcare sector. Harnessing state-of-the-art technological advancements and implementing robust clinical governance systems, he and his team have spearheaded a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery, ensuring the provision of exemplary services. Driven by an unyielding pursuit of excellence, he has led initiatives to optimize operational efficiency, ensure financial sustainability, and institute a comprehensive revenue cycle management system within EHA.

Dr Gretchen Purcell Jackson

VP and Scientific Medical Officer, Intuitive, USA

Gretchen Jackson is vice president and scientific medical officer at Intuitive and an associate professor of surgery, pediatrics, and biomedical informatics at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Jackson is an internationally recognized biomedical informatician and accomplished clinical surgeon with over 30 years of contributions to informatics research, innovations in health information technologies, and surgical science. She is a past president and past chair of the board of directors for the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (FACMI) and the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA). She is also an elected member of the Society for University Surgeons, the Southern Surgical Association, and the American Surgical Association.

Before joining Intuitive in 2022, Jackson was the chief health and science officer for IBM Watson Health, and before that, Watson Health’s chief science officer. Jackson earned a BS in electrical engineering, an MD, and her PhD in medical information sciences from Stanford University.

Mr Carlos Varela Ferro

COO, Fundació Aspace Catalunya; La Unió Catalana d’Hospitals, Spain

Mr. Carlos Varela Ferro is an executive with a rich academic background spanning various domains, including a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Organizations Management by ESADE, a Master’s Degree in eHealth, Innovation, and Digital Transformation, as well as an MBA in Sport Management. He is a Physiotherapist and a Specialist in Pediatrics, Aquatic Therapy and, Assistive Technology. Additionally, he is a Certified Specialist Sports Technician in Paralympic sports accredited by FEDPC.
Professionally, Carlos has dedicated over 18 years to Fundació Aspace Catalunya – now as the Chief Operating Officer. Furthermore, he is the founder and CEO of a Healthcare Management software startup and a member of the International Committee, Innovation Committee, and Social Services Committee of La Unio, Catalan Hospital Health & Social Services Association.
His previous roles include being the Neurorehabilitation Director at Aspace and the Head Coach for Paralympic sports at FEDPC, participating in the London 2012 – Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Additionally, he has served as an Event Director for numerous European and World Championships in Paralympic sports accredited by BISFed and IFCPF.
Passionate about healthcare quality, he actively engages in complex projects and leads the implementation of integrated care models that prioritize both social and healthcare perspectives. Carlos has the mission in threefold: ensuring solvency through continuous improvement in efficiency and healthcare quality, fostering an integrated social-healthcare model and, driving transformation by harmonizing processes to enhance continuity of care. He believes these efforts aim to empower individuals and enrich their care experiences.
