Gain insights into how health systems in low-resource settings are strengthening their resilience in an increasingly volatile and uncertain world, responding to challenges including climate impacts, workforce shortages, infrastructure constraints, and supply chain disruptions. This session showcases practical approaches to maintaining service continuity, redesigning care delivery, and embedding sustainability into governance and strategic planning. Participants will discover three core dimensions of resilience that can serve as a framework for actionable strategies to drive transformation that ensures equitable, low-carbon, and people-centred hospitals and health systems.

Prof. Asad Mian

Head of Healthcare Transformation, Learning Programs & Systems, Evercare Group, UAE

Professor Asad Mian, MD, PhD, leads Healthcare Transformation, Learning Programs & Systems at Evercare Group across Pakistan, Kenya, and Nigeria. He applies human-centered design and pragmatic implementation science to strengthen systems, patient experience, workforce capability and adaptability, linking transformation to growth and financial performance.

He earned a PhD and trained in genetics and pediatrics in the United States before practicing pediatric emergency medicine as faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. He spent a decade at Aga Khan University as Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine, founding its first healthcare innovation and incubation hub.

His work integrates research, education, quality improvement, frugal innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership development in resource-constrained settings. He trains students, postgraduates, leaders, and frontline teams in context-sensitive problem-solving.

He co-founded Innovly, an innovation-management venture, and created Zalsa, a creative-movement approach to workforce well-being.

Dr. Mian publishes across genres: peer-reviewed research; multilingual child health literacy through Biloongra; narrative medicine, short fiction, and creative nonfiction in An Itinerant Observer; medical innovation in MEDJACK: The Extraordinary Journey of an Ordinary Hack; and essays for The Express Tribune.

Mr Rashid Khalani

CEO, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya

Rashid Khalani is the Chief Executive Officer of the Aga Khan University Hospital, a position he has held since February 2022. Previously, he served as the Chief Finance Officer of the Hospital.

A Finance and Business professional by training, Mr. Khalani has had a long and distinguished career with the Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan Development Network for over 20 years. In that period, he has held various positions in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tanzania and since August 2012, in Kenya.

Mr Khalani holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and has also completed the Harvard Kennedy School’s Adaptive Leadership programme.

Dr Sherzad Sediquillah

Head of Pediatric & Neonatology Departments, Medical Officer in Charge, Afghanistan Health Assessment Centre & Motahar Curative Hospital, Afghanistan

Dr Sediqullah Sherzad serves as a leader at the Afghanistan Health Assessment Centre and Motahar Curative Hospital, where he holds the roles of Head of Pediatrics and Neonatology and Medical In-Charge of the AHAC. He anchors core ethics in placing the patient at the center of care, acting with integrity, and delivering services that respect every community member.

Dr. Sherzad is distinguished by strong leadership and strategic capabilities. He brings a decade of experience as a clinician and in healthcare management within Afghanistan. He designed, implemented, and completed a professional development program focused on capacity building for Migration Staff, the first of its kind in Afghanistan. He is an active member of the International Panel Physician Association and was invited to the association’s international conference in Lisbon in 2025, marking Afghanistan’s first participation.

His ongoing professional development includes courses completed through UNITAR, IOM, and NIH. He also serves as a lecturer at medical university in Kabul. As a participant selected for the 2026 Young Executives Leaders (YEL) programme, he aims to advance his strategic capabilities in hospital and health-system governance, promote ethical leadership in challenging environments, and build international networks to amplify Afghanistan’s health priorities on the world stage.
