International Hospital Federation announces winners of IHF Awards 2024

On 11 September 2024, the IHF held its annual Award Ceremony and Gala Dinner to celebrate excellence in hospital and healthcare leadership.

The exemplary work of hospitals from 23 countries and territories was recognized for initiatives that improve the level, quality, and sustainability of healthcare service delivery. The IHF Awards promote the exchange of good practices in key areas of healthcare leadership, environmental sustainability, and innovation. Finalists were selected across the seven Award categories and earned Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards as well as honourable mentions in each category.

The ceremony took place in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) at the Windsor Convention & Expo Center in front of an audience of around 400 international hospital and healthcare executives. The Awards Ceremony was a highlight of the 47^th World Hospital Congress, which gathered 1300 attendees from over 65 countries and territories.

The Awards Committee, composed of health leaders from around the world and chaired by Dr Lawrence Lai, IHF Honorary Member, scored over 500 entries submitted from 37 countries and territories.

Scoring for the 6 Excellence Awards is based on five criteria: originality and innovation; intended impact; adaptability and scalability; scientific rigor; and clarity. For the Grand Hospital Award, entries were scored based on overall success in achieving the five dimensions of healthcare delivery (health service quality, patient experience, clinical outcomes and health equity, cost efficiency, and workforce wellbeing), as well as ability to sustain their success, and achievements.

The projects and programmes presented in each entry recognize innovative, impactful work in hospitals worldwide. In honouring these achievements, the IHF Awards are an important aspect of the IHF’s commitment to international knowledge exchange by promoting good practices that improve the level, quality, and sustainability of healthcare service delivery.

The IHF Awards 2024 recipients in each category are as follows.

Dr Kwang Tae Kim Grand Hospital Award – recognizing hospitals that excelled in the five dimensions of healthcare delivery: quality and safety, patient experience, cost efficiency, workforce wellbeing, and health equity and access.

Gold: Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou (Taiwan).
Silver: Dammam Medical Complex (Saudi Arabia).
Bronze: Cotabato Regional and Medical Center (Philippines).
Honourable mentions: Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (India), National University Hospital (Singapore), Aga Khan Hospital Dar es Salaam (AKHD) (Tanzania), Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital (United Arab Emirates).

Dr Prathap C Reddy Excellence Award for Clinical Quality and Patient Safety – a new Award for 2024 – honouring hospitals for their innovative and exemplary projects or programmes in enhancing clinical quality and patient safety.

Gold: Hospital Estadual de Dermatologia Sanitária Colônia Santa Marta (HDS) – Agir (Brazil).
Silver: ASL Piacenza, Guglielmo da Saliceto Hospital (Italy).
Bronze: Emirates Health Services (EHS) – Primary Health Care Department (United Arab Emirates).
Honourable mentions: Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital – Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Jubail Health Network (Saudi Arabia), Dubai Health Authority (United Arab Emirates), Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (United Arab Emirates).

American Hospital Association Excellence Award for Healthcare Workers’ Wellbeing – recognizing excellence or outstanding achievements in ensuring the wellbeing and sustainability of healthcare workers.

Gold: University of Pennsylvania Health System (United States of America).
Silver: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi (Pakistan).
Bronze: Corewell Health (United States of America).
Honourable mentions: Tawam Hospital (United Arab Emirates), National University Hospital (Singapore), The Medical City Hospital, Ortigas (Philippines), Saint Louis University–Sacred Heart Medical Center (Philippines).

Mastercard Award for Hospital Operational Excellence – a new Award for 2024 – acknowledging measurable success in operational outcomes and efficiencies through projects, programmes, or services.

Gold: Unidade Local de Saúde de Santo António (Portugal).
Silver: CMP Medical Center (Poland).
Bronze: National University Hospital (Singapore).
Honourable mentions: Emirates Health Services (EHS) – Radiology Department (United Arab Emirates), Prince Sultan Cardiac Center Qassim (Saudi Arabia), Northern Sydney Local Health District (Australia), Groote Schuur Hospital (South Africa).

American College of Healthcare Executives Excellence Award for Leadership and Management – honouring excellence or outstanding leadership and management in hospitals or healthcare organizations.

Gold: National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita (Indonesia).
Silver: King Saud Medical City (Saudi Arabia).
Bronze: Cromwell Hospital (United Kingdom).
Honourable mentions: Emirates Health Services (United Arab Emirates), Fundació Assistencial Mútua Terrassa (Spain), University Hospitals (United States of America), Tondo Medical Center (Philippines).

Ashikaga-Nikken Excellence Award for Low-Carbon Healthcare – recognizing hospitals that have made the most demonstrable progress in the last 12–18 months in key areas of sustainability strategy and implementation.

Gold: Fundació Sanitària Mollet (Spain).
Silver: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).
Bronze: vzw Maria Middelares (Belgium).
Honourable mentions: Avenue Healthcare Limited (Kenya), CUF (Portugal), Apollo Hospitals (India), Hospital Clínica Bíblica (Costa Rica).

Seddiqi Holding Excellence Award for Social and Environmental Responsibility – acknowledging excellence or outstanding achievements in advancing social and environmental responsibility.

Gold: Egypt Healthcare Authority (Egypt).
Silver: Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (Canada).
Bronze: Hospital Universitário de Lagarto (Brazil).
Honourable mentions: Fujairah Hospital (United Arab Emirates), King Khalid Hospital Alkharj, Member of Riyadh First Health Cluster (Saudi Arabia), King Abdulaziz Specialist Hospital, Taif (Saudi Arabia), Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (Philippines).

The IHF Awards 2025 will be awarded at the 48^th World Hospital Congress in Geneva (Switzerland) – marking the 10^th year of the IHF Awards programme. The call for entries will be announced in February 2025.
