Hospital Site Visits

There are several hospital and health institution site visits that will take place on 11 November from 15:00 to 18:00. Hospital visits are not included in the delegate registration and must be booked and paid for in advance. The fee is € 30 (part of the proceeds will be donated to charity). Slots are very limited so we suggest you register early. You can sign-up for any of them when you register for the Congress. Only congress participants can join the site visits.

Transportation will be arranged and the assembly point is at Palau de Congressos. Departure time is at 15:00 and you will return at Plaza España at 18:00. The actual length of the visit is 2 hours plus travel time of 30 minutes per way.

SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital (SJD) is a university hospital specializing in maternal, child and adolescent health care. Founded in 1867, SJD belongs to the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God and is a private, non-profit institution that has been integrated into the public network of the Spanish national health system since 1973. SJD is the largest children’s hospital in Spain and is one of the most recognized of its category across Europe. The hospital is accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Health as a reference center for all of Spain in a wide range of specialties such as Onco-haematology, Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosciences, Genetics, Rare Diseases, Ophthalmology and Reconstructive Surgery to name a few. Several Units of HSJD have been accredited by the European Commission as members of the European Reference Networks (ERNs) of rare and complex diseases; it is actually participating in 14 out of 24 ERNs, and its participation in 7 ERNs more is going to be made official very soon, positioning SJD’s center as one of the pediatric hospitals with the highest number of recognitions in Europe (21/24).

Associated with the University of Barcelona since 1994 and with the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, a university adult hospital, SJD has a specialized pediatric research program managed by the Sant Joan de Déu Research Foundation. SJD together with the Hospital Clínic is one of the most well-known hospital alliances in Spain and an international reference for highly specialized hospital care, teaching and research. Thanks to numerous donors, the future SJD Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona, which will be one of the largest pediatric oncology centers in Europe, is under construction and is scheduled to open in the first quarter of next year.

Patient Experience route

On this route, visitors can learn how tools and methodologies have been incorporated to put the patient experience at the center and how this has become a driver of change in the organization. The improvement plans and evaluations are carried out with patients, families and professionals under a Patient-Centric approach. In addition, the needs of users and their participation in the design of services in new strategic areas, such as digital transformation and other key hospital projects, have been incorporated. In conjunction with this approach, the institution has for years been deploying a humanization process to promote patient- and family-centered care, the aim of which is to develop a comprehensive care model that responds to needs beyond the act of care. The visit to the hospital will provide an opportunity to learn about the keys to this process.

Tecnologically advanced facilities route

High technology has been introduced intensively within healthcare organizations in order to meet the needs of high specialization. The Institut Guttmann is a specialized hospital in the medical and surgical treatment and comprehensive rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury or other neurological disabilities. Its main objective is to provide specialised, comprehensive, continuous and personalized care, incorporating the highest levels of science, technology and compassion.

Its characteristic care model is based on the intervention of an expert multidisciplinary team, the compassion and specialisation of its professionals, and the scientific rigour with which it operates; together with modern facilities and the continuous incorporation of the latest technology, these make the Institut Guttmann one of the world’s leading hospitals in neurorehabilitation field today.

The care and neurorehabilitation activity of the Institut Guttmann is organised by functional units and clinical programmes for the rehabilitation of patients, as well as a number of specific clinical procedures able to bring significant qualitative improvements in the health field and in the improvement of the quality of life of those affected by a neurological disability. The Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) is a public and specialised centre for cancer. Its approach to the disease is comprehensive as it combines cancer prevention, patient care, specialised training and research all under the umbrella of a single organisation and it is the foremost centre of its kind in Spain. A publicly owned company, it was founded in 1995 by the Government of Catalonia’s Ministry of Health and began functioning in 1996 at the Hospital Duran i Reynals facilities in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. In 2002, ICO Girona opened and the following year, ICO Badalona. In 2014, ICO Camp de Tarragona i Terres de l’Ebre was launched.

The ICO has its own territorial model, as a multi-centre organisation structured into a network with four specialised oncology centres working in partnership with four university hospitals: Bellvitge, Dr. Josep Trueta, Germans Trias i Pujol and Joan XXIII, plus a further twenty local hospitals. The ICO’s aim is to take the specialist to where the patient is and to guarantee maximum equity in healthcare provision.

Today, the ICO is the referral oncology centre for close to 65% of the adult population of Catalonia.

During the programmed visit to the Catalan Institute of Oncology, it will be possible to visit the Radiotherapy Oncology Service, at its centre in L’Hospitalet, where cancer treatment techniques are based on the use of ionising radiation, through external radiotherapy or brachytherapy. Furthermore, it will also be possible to visit the Metropolitan Pharmacy, which was opened in 2015 and is the largest oncology pharmacy in Southern Europe. It covers a surface area of 1,100 square metres and has the capacity to produce over 200,000 cytostatic drugs per year thanks to computerised robots, thus ensuring the existence and supply of the most appropriate medicines for the needs of patients and of the centre.

Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona is a non-profit organization at the service of people with cognitive decline, Alzheimer´s disease (AD)or other dementias; and their families. To fulfill such objective we have been working  in the fields of diagnosis, treatment, research, education and awareness since 1995.

We are a specialized reference center in diagnosis and monitoring of people with cognitive disorders and dementia, as well as in social care for the individual’s families. At the Memory Clinic, we see more than 8.000 people a year, including 2.000 new individuals.

At the Day Care Center, about 200 people with Alzheimer´s or other dementias are treated in our facilities daily. We also offer training and support to their families and caregivers.

We are involved in research in the fields of cognitive decline and dementia, and have a broad approach in research: basic, clinical, applied and social. We have led more than 140 clinical trials and have one of the largest biological samples and genetic collections for AD in Europe.

Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona is also dedicated to disseminate the message in the fields of education, and to raise awareness of health professionals, families and society. The latter allows us to offer high-quality care to the people affected and to improve their quality of life.

Our outpatient healthcare model meets many of the requirements specified by International Alzheimer´s Plans and provides a comprehensive integrated person-centered model of health-care with a holistic approach to people with cognitive disorders, Alzheimer´s disease or other dementias, as well as to their families and caregivers. This model is also built-in research emphasis.
