Highlights from the 43rd World Hospital Congress in Muscat

The 43rd World Hospital Congress held in Muscat, Oman on 6-9 November was a success with 630 health leaders and professionals from 60 countries joining the discussion on resilient health services, investments for prosperity and innovations. The event was organized by the IHF with the Ministry of Health of the Sultanate of Oman.
The Congress was officially opened by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Obaid Al Saidi, Minister of Health of Oman, and Dr. Francisco Balestrin, then IHF President. Dr. Ahmed Al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, provided a keynote presentation on the key role to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage in a challenging region.

About 130 speakers shared their insights, expertise and experiences across a range of keynote speeches, panel discussions, and concurrent sessions. You can view and download the presentations here.
There were also more than 50 posters featured in the exhibition area that showcased best practices and innovations from around the world. You can view the digital posters here. This year’s Best Poster Award was given to “Inventory management in the National Heart Center” from National Heart Center / Royal Hospital in Oman.
In addition, twenty-seven outstanding projects and programs were recognized during the 2019 IHF Awards ceremony. Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital from Taiwan was named the Gold winner of the IHF/Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award for their project “A comprehensive and sequential solution enhancing the quality care of acute myocardial infarction”.

Attendees also enjoyed opportunities to widen their networks and connect with industry peers from around the globe during the breaks and social events such as the Welcome Reception and Gala Dinner. This was also enhanced by CERCA, a cutting-edge mobile application that takes the work out of networking, by securely analyzing and identifying delegates who most closely have aligned goals and interests.
Before the Congress, a couple of pre-conference sessions were offered:

  • The “Fast Forward” Initiative for community- and person-centered hospitals and health services workshop hosted by the WHO
  • Economics for Healthcare Leaders workshop facilitated by health economist and public health specialist Thomas Vogel

Right after the congress, a number of delegates joined the site visits to The Royal Hospital and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital.

The event officially closed with a ceremonial hand-over of the Congress from Dr. Qasem Al Salmi, Chair of the 2019 Organizing Committee and representative of MOH-Oman to Dr. Roser Fernández, CEO, and Dr. Enric Mangas, President, of La Unió Catalana d’Hospitals which will host the 44th installment next year in Barcelona.
