Sustainable healthcare in the WHC2026 programme
How can hospitals deliver safe, quality, and low-carbon care to drive climate resilience with benefits for the planet and the health of their communities?
This year’s World Hospital Congress features sessions and workshops spotlighting sustainability at every level of hospital leadership and operations – sharing proven strategies for reducing environmental impact while improving quality of care. Here are just some of the sessions to add to your agenda.
Interactive workshops
Taking action with the Geneva Sustainability Centre workshop
In this interactive workshop, the Geneva Sustainability Centre team will guide participants through a practical roadmap-building exercise, sharing real-world insights, good practices, and implementation strategies. You will leave with actionable knowledge and fresh perspectives to strengthen sustainability planning within your own hospital or health systems.
GSC peer learning workshop: Leading your hospital’s sustainability transformation
Exchange with peers on the ways hospitals are addressing sustainability in this interactive session. Participants will hear directly from hospitals using the GSC’s Sustainability Accelerator Tool to integrate sustainability into strategic planning and quality improvement efforts. You will discover sector-specific guidance, available support, and proven practices to help accelerate sustainability action.
Oral sessions
Future of hospitals and health systems: Resilience pathways in low-resource settings
Discover how health systems in low-resource settings are strengthening their resilience in an increasingly volatile and uncertain world, responding to challenges including climate impacts, workforce shortages, infrastructure constraints, and supply chain disruptions. This session showcases practical approaches to maintaining service continuity, redesigning care delivery, and embedding sustainability into governance and strategic planning.
Sustainable clinical care: Reducing emissions while improving outcomes
Learn how clinical teams are embedding sustainability into everyday care without compromising patient safety or quality. Focusing on the operating theatre, this session showcases practical strategies that demonstrate how evidence-based clinical innovation, strong leadership, and cross-functional collaboration can reduce emissions, optimize resource use, and accelerate the transition to low-carbon healthcare while maintaining excellent patient outcomes.
Transforming hospitals for net zero: Resilience, innovation, and low-carbon care
Explore the ways hospitals are transforming to deliver resilient, low-carbon care through integrated strategies that combine sustainability, clinical innovation, and digital advancement. This session brings together examples showcasing net-zero roadmaps, ESG-driven governance, circular practices, smart hospital design, and low-carbon clinical pathways.
