The IHF welcomes you to the World Hospital Congress

On behalf of the IHF, I’m thrilled to say “bem-vindo” (welcome) to spectacular Rio de Janeiro – home of the World Hospital Congress 2024.

International collaboration is the core foundation of the IHF and our Congress. And a fruitful cooperation with our full member, the Brazilian Hospital Federation (FBH), has brought the Congress back to Rio 15 years after the hugely successful previous edition.

We keenly anticipate the opportunity to connect our international community with leaders of hospital and healthcare delivery organizations from across the Americas region. Fresh perspectives on challenges, innovations, and solutions for the healthcare sector will be shared. And a unifying commitment to advance our common vision – improving health for all – will drive our discussions.

Congress provides a forum to harness our collective power and potential to inspire each other to deliver for the communities we serve. The challenges of tomorrow must be met with new solutions. As well as contemporary leadership, our programme will focus on themes related to the healthcare workforce, clinical models to enhance quality, innovations in care and hospital operations, and sustainability. Each of these topics is a key ingredient to ensure that our hospitals and health systems are fit for the future.

I look forward to seeing you this September at the 47th World Hospital Congress. Together we will learn, exchange, and advance. It is sure to be a memorable experience that will have a lasting legacy for healthcare leadership worldwide.

Welcome to Rio de Janeiro from the host of the 47th World Hospital Congress

We are honoured and happy with the opportunity to host the 47th World Hospital Congress. Rio de Janeiro, with its charms and natural wonders, welcomes the global hospital community with open arms. Let’s make this event a historic meeting, with a scientific programme of excellence rich in experiences, connections, and learning.

The main objective of our meeting is to promote an event of “Global learning, local action”. We want to highlight successful experiences and enable the exchange of knowledge on a global level. To this end, we are planning a programme that will include a huge variety of sessions, workshops, and poster presentations, the IHF Awards Ceremony, hospital visits, the i-to-i Innovation Hub, an industry exhibition, and various networking opportunities. We expect to receive more than 2,000 participants from all over the planet.

With a population of 214 million inhabitants, Brazil is one of the largest healthcare markets in the world. Our accumulated experiences show how a country of continental dimensions, with stark socioeconomic disparities between regions, organized itself to offer the largest public health system on the planet, offering comprehensive and universal assistance. For years, we have been a reference in carrying out mass immunization campaigns, performing organ transplants, and executing the largest drug distribution programme on the planet. Currently, there are more than 7000 accredited healthcare establishments in Brazil, of which more than half are hospitals.

The Brazilian Hospital Federation is a pioneering entity in representing and defending the interests of the Brazilian hospital sector. An institution that has represented more than 8000 hospitals in the country for more than 50 years. Alongside the International Hospital Federation, FBH is preparing to make this 2024 edition, in Rio de Janeiro, a landmark meeting. Cidade Maravilhosa, as it is known, provides the opportunity to combine an agenda of debates and networking, with a unique tourist and cultural experience. Furthermore, Rio de Janeiro now has an important range of hospitals and health services, which makes the city one of the most popular destinations for plastic surgery and aesthetic procedures. Finally, a strategic place to promote this long-awaited meeting.

In September 2024, Rio de Janeiro will be the world capital of hospitals, and we are waiting for you all to hold a historic meeting together!

The provision and availability of food and beverages play a key role in making Congress attendees comfortable. At the IHF, we want to make sure that we also consider the sustainability of the food we offer and the items we use to serve it.

The environmental impact of a meat-based meal is 11 times higher than a vegetarian meal (1). To contribute to the reduction of emissions, plant-based, and vegetarian meals will be offered at Congress. In addition, coffee breaks will utilize fair trade, organically sourced products whenever possible, and dairy alternatives such as oat milk will be provided.

Non-recycled waste goes to landfills, where it becomes a source of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Methane, a gas that accounts for about 30% of the increase in global temperature (3), is one of them. Thus, recycling is essential to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

With this purpose in mind, we will have waste collection points at the Congress for segregating various materials, including organic waste, PET, glass, aluminium, and paper or cardboard.

In an effort to minimize our congress’s footprint in terms of carbon emissions associated with materials’ production, transport and waste generation, we have decided to not provide delegate bags. They are not always properly disposed of and they are non-essential items that when reduced and/or avoided, can greatly decrease a conference’s environmental impact.

Meals and coffee breaks will be served using reusable dishware and cutlery. Additionally water station cups are recyclable and/or biodegradable.

Sustainability

The IHF, FBH, Geneva Sustainability Centre along with Creacteve Eventos and Windsor Hotels & Convention Centre are committed to organizing an environmentally sustainable Congress. By prioritizing sustainability, the World Hospital Congress can act as an example to participants for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of events, providing a positive experience to visitors and preserving the local environment for its community.We’re currently working with our partners and suppliers to implement sustainable practices in the main areas below. Capt Usha Banerjee

Capt. (Dr.) Usha Banerjee, Group Director of Nursing at Apollo Hospitals, is a distinguished alumni of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. Commissioned into the Military Nursing Services in 1989, she received several prestigious awards during her service, including the President’s Medal. After voluntary release in 1996, she enhanced her leadership skills with an MBA, and multiple diplomas in Training and Development and Hospital Administration, and PhD in Management. With over 35 years of experience, Dr. Banerjee has held leadership positions in leading healthcare organizations like Manipal Hospitals, Max Healthcare, and Apollo Hospitals Group (2005 to date), where she has overseen the commissioning of more than 17 hospitals of which many are JCI / Nationally accredited. She is a recognized leader in Healthcare. Has contributed to 63 national and international journals. Her influence spans various industry task forces focused on nursing reforms and includes key roles with organizations like FICCI, CII, and the Indian Nursing Council. Dr. Banerjee has received numerous accolades, such as the Healthcare Leadership Icon award and recognition as a Best Leader by both Apollo Hospitals and the Impact Guru Foundation for her philanthropic work. As a member of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) and other prominent associations she continues to elevate healthcare standards in India. She has carved a niche for herself as an influential leader in Healthcare India.

Ms Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE

Past-President, International Hospital Federation; CEO, American College of Healthcare Executives, USA

Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the American College of Healthcare Executives. This is an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. Alongside this role, she serves on the board of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management.

In November 2015, Ms Bowen was nominated by the American Hospital Association, which is an IHF Full Member, to become their representative on the IHF Governing Council. After a successful mandate, Ms Bowen was elected as IHF President Designate in 2019, became IHF President in November 2021 and started her mandate as IHF Past-President in October 2023.

Ms Bowen is board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow of both ACHE and the American Society of Association Executives. Additionally, she is a Baldrige Executive Fellow and a Certified Association Executive.

An experienced and dedicated healthcare industry leader, Ms Bowen was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare and one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare.

Abdulateef is the General Director for the General Directorate of Organizational Excellence in Ministry of Health.

He worked as the Assistant of General Director for General Directorate of Hospital Affairs for good time to build up Wazen Program and Adapt the best practices for Hospital Commissioning in collaboration with Engineering Deputyship and Cluster Leaders and Regional Directorates 2022.

He has different experiences in both governmental and private healthcare Institutions and hospitals as junior and senior staff until reach to an executive leader positions for the last 23 years. His career was started in National Guard Hospital, Security Forces Hospital, then moved to King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz University Hospital at Princess Norah University, in addition to he has a good experience in Private hospitals and appointed in different positions like Quality Director, Pharmacy Director and Hospital CEO. He used to be a CBAHI Surveyor for more 10 years, and currently he is CHI Surveyor for Healthcare Institutions and Insurance Company.
